Hyderabad is the first city in India to apply for the ‘Water Plus City’ certification after retaining the ODF++ certification for 3 years. The certificate is being issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to ensure that the untreated waste-water is not released into the environment. Under GHMC, every day around 1781 MLD of sewage is generated out of which 770 MLD is treated with the help of 18 STPs of HMWSSB. Other cities are able to treat only 20–30% of the generated sewage in comparison to 43% by HMWSSB in the city alone.
